SCHENECTADY – Virginia ‘Jean’ DeMatteo, 89, of Foster Avenue, entered into eternal peace on Sunday at Ellis Hospital after a brief illness.
Jean was born and educated in Schenectady, the daughter of the late Carmen and Gerloma Mastroianni DeMatteo. She worked for the General Electric Company as a coil winder and tool keeper. She retired after 39 years of dedicated service in 1981. Jean helped in daily running of the family business DeMatteo’s Grill on the corner of Foster Avenue and Seneca Street. She was fondly referred to as “Aunt Jean” to many of the grill’s patrons and her friends. Jean leaves behind a legacy of generosity and kind heartedness. She was a member of the GE Quarter Century Club and a devoted communicant of St. Anthony’s Church.
She was predeceased by her siblings, Rachel Altieri, Edward DeMatteo, Anna Ciccarelli, James DeMatteo and Arthur DeMatteo.
Survivors include her loving brother Louis ‘Litch’ DeMatteo and his wife Maria, of Schenectady, many dear nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews; her life long friend, Jane Cicciu and her longtime caregiver Marilyn Lane; and many wonderful friends.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday morning at 11:30 am at St. Anthony’s Church, 331 Seward Place, Schenectady, NY 12305.
Relatives and friends are invited and may call at the Rossi & Ditoro Funeral Home, Union at N. Jay Streets, Tuesday from 3 to 7 pm.
Memorial contributions may be made in Jean’s memory to St. Anthony’s Church.
