GLENVILLE – Thomas J. Saul, 91, passed away on Saturday May 7th. He was born in Brooklyn, NY on May 17, 1924 to the late Jacob Nicholas Saul and Elsie Bayersdorfer Saul. Mr. Saul spent his early years in West Hempstead, NY, graduating from Hempstead High School in 1942. He enrolled in the US Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point, NY and, as a cadet midshipman at age 19, was sent to Murmansk, Russia on his first training duty aboard a ship in a convoy carrying supplies to the Russian Army. He returned to the United States before returning to sea aboard the same ship, this time to Scotland and England in time to be commandeered into duty in the Normandy Invasion in 1944 where he made nine crossings transporting troops and equipment across the English Channel to Omaha and Utah Beaches.
When he again returned to Kings Point to finish his schooling and graduate in 1945 with a BS degree he was commissioned an Ensign in the US Navy, a branch of the service in which his father was also serving. He was then sent to the Pacific where he served in the Philippines, China and Japan.
Arriving home after the war, he attended Babson College in Wellesley, MA, receiving a BS degree in Business Administration. He worked in the Philadelphia and Boston areas and in 1954 married Maureen Mason of Needham, MA. He moved to Scotia, NY in 1968 where he joined General Electric Company and worked in management in several departments until his retirement in 1986. During his years in business he also continued his association with the US Navy serving in the US Navy Reserve where he was at one time Commanding Officer of the Albany/Troy Navy Reserve Units. He achieved the rank of Captain in 1967 and retired from the Navy in 1976 after 33 years of service both active and reserve status.
Survivors include his devoted wife of 61 years, Maureen Mason Saul; son Bryan (Joann) of Port Townsend, WA, son Darrell (Cherylann) of Amsterdam, NY, daughter Diane Timmerman of Schenectady, NY and five grandchildren, Brooke, Jacob and Nicholas Saul of Port Townsend, WA, Brittany Tarver (Darry) of Reno, NV, Amanda Saul of Gloversville, NY, and a great granddaughter, Aiyanna Tarver of Reno, NV.
Mr. Saul was a member of the Board of Directors of Ingersoll Place in Schenectady, NY for 23 years, a member of the VFW Post 9132 Niskayuna, the American Legion Post 1002, the Elfun Society, the North American Convoy Club (England), and the Scottish Rite Valley of Schenectady.
In accordance with the wishes of Mr. Saul, there will be no calling hours. A family memorial service will be held at a later date at the convenience of the family. Interment will be in the Conant Cemetery in East Jaffrey, NH. Memorial contributions may be made in Mr. Saul's memory to the organization of one's choice.
