Amsterdam – On Sunday, September 25, 2022, Thom R. Rich entered into eternal peace at Albany Medical Center surrounded by his adoring family.
Thom came into this life on February 27, 1950, the youngest son of the late Joseph and Dorothy (Vebber) Rich. He left school at a young age to help his parents run the family’s grocery on the East end of Amsterdam. Thom worked several security positions with his oldest brother Phillip before beginning his career as a meat manager for P&C Markets which would come to an abrupt end after suffering a massive heart attack in 1992.
One of his favorite past times was attending the Amsterdam Rams football games. He eventually made a banner for the team which became a well-known image faithfully at all of the team’s games. Another pastime, he adored was playing bocce. Thom was a member of the City’sBocce club and enjoyed helping to maintain the club’s bocce courts and pavilion on the Southside of Amsterdam
He is predeceased by his parents, brothers Philip A. Rich, and Michael C. Rich, formerly of Amsterdam, and former wife and best friend Patricia A. (DiCaprio) Mattie whom he married on April 25. 1970. He is survived by his loving daughter Kristie L. (Rich) and son-in-law Kevin VanHoesen of Amsterdam, grandsons, Michael P. Rich, and Kristofer G. Newell, both of Amsterdam, and SPC. Matthew VanHoesen of Fort Drum. Sister Carol Lee (Rich) Ross of Amsterdam. Former wife Catherine A. Carey of Schenectady and many nieces and nephews.
A memorial and graveside service will be held at a later date at the family’s convenience.
