SCOTIA – Richard J. ‘Rit’ Ruzza, 76, passed away peacefully at Ellis Hospital, on Wednesday, January 1, 2025.
Rit was born in Schenectady, NY, on July 21, 1948, the beloved son of Angelo and Marietta Gabriele Ruzza. He was a proud graduate of Linton High School and honorably served his country in the United States Army, stationed in Vietnam.
After his military service, Rit spent time in California, where he embraced life to the fullest. He explored Highway 1 on his motorcycle, attended legendary concerts featuring Janis Joplin and Jimi Hendrix, and made cherished memories.
Rit returned to Schenectady, where he dedicated many years of hard work as a highway maintenance worker for Schenectady County before his retirement.
A true humanitarian, Rit had a heart of gold. He would do anything for anyone, treasuring his family above all else and lending a helping hand whenever it was needed. His generosity extended not only to people but also to animals, especially his cats.
Rit was an avid bowler, achieving numerous 300 games at Boulevard Bowl. He also had a fondness for scratch-off lottery tickets. In his retirement, Rit found joy in simple pleasures, including the camaraderie of the “Breakfast Club,” where he gathered with cousins and fellow workers at favorite spots like the Bellevue Café and the Chinese Buffet.
Rit will be remembered for his kind spirit, unwavering generosity, and the countless lives he touched.
In addition to his parents, Rit was predeceased by his siblings, Larry Ruzzo, Josephine Cellupica, her husband Frank Cellupica, and Nancy Pantano.
He is survived by his dear nieces and nephews, Tina Sharifipour, Dane and Mecha Cellupica, and Dario Pantano; his great-nieces and nephews, Sofia (Sean) Donovan, Sarah (Tom) Stockwell, Ruby, Matthew and Ryan Pantano; a great-great nephew, Rowan Stockwell and a brother-in-law, Ron (Donna) Cellupica.
Relatives and friends are invited and may call at the Rossi & Ditoro Funeral Home on Monday from 3-5 pm. Interment will take place in St. Anthony’s Cemetery.
