Richard A. Reiter

July 23, 1927 — June 4, 2023

Richard A Reiter, 95, of Glenville NY passed away peacefully on Sunday, June 4, 2023, at the Daughters of Sarah Senior Living Community in Albany, NY, where he spent his last years with his loving wife Carol by his side.

Richard was born in Wisconsin and grew up in Marquette, Michigan with his parents and brother Jerry. He graduated high school at the top of his class and continued his education at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, PA. Richard was then drafted to the Army where he served 3 years in Alaska before returning to complete his doctorate in physics. It was during his later college years that Richard was first married, and children Daniel and Diane were born.

After completing his formal studies, Richard and his family moved to Glenville, NY, and took a job with GE Knolls Atomic Power Laboratory in Niskayuna where he worked until retirement. Richard married Carol on July 14, 1966, and they were happily married for nearly 57 years. He had numerous hobbies that he loved such as flying small planes, competing in bowling leagues and bridge games, collecting model trains, and traveling on his bicycle. In retirement, Richard enjoyed volunteering by fixing computers for various causes and staying up to date with current technologies.

Richard and Carol enjoyed spending time together with their close friends from Good Shepherd Lutheran Church where they dedicated much of their time, including attending prayer groups, and regular involvement in all social events. He served as both treasurer and an usher for services on a regular basis. They also looked forward to their yearly summer trip to Nantucket where they had many good times with their special church family. Experiencing classical music was special to them as well, of which they attended many local concerts, and was often the soundtrack of their home.
Education was very important to Richard, and he was very proud to see his children and grandchildren continue their education and graduate college. He enjoyed attending his grandchildren’s events and loved to share special experiences with them such as holiday celebrations, ballgames, and performances at Proctors.

Richard is survived by his wife Carol (Johansson) Reiter, daughter Diane Reiter Staalesen and her partner Paul Jancsy, daughter-in-law Linda (Daniel) Reiter, two grandchildren Jason Staalesen and his wife Stacey, Sherri Lehan and her husband Adam, and two great-grandchildren Kelsey Staalesen and Landon Lehan; as well as sister-in-law Carol (Gerald) Boyd Reiter, sister-in-law Patsy (Johansson) Mader, and a number of nieces and nephews.

Family waiting for him in heaven include his parents Alfred and Prudence Reiter; brother Rev. Gerald Reiter; and son Daniel Reiter
