SCHENECTADY – Michael Marotta, 93, of Manhattan Street, entered into eternal rest on Saturday at the Ellis Residential and Rehabilitation Center, surrounded by his loving and devoted family.
Michael was born in Schenectady, the son of the late Michael and Concetta DeAngelo Marotta. He was a 1935 graduate of the former Nott Terrace High School, excelling as a champion cross country runner, setting many records with William F. Eddy as his coach. Michael honorably served during WWII as a Staff Sergeant in the Army Air Force and continued serving his country with the National Guard. He worked in the family business as a master tradesman, developing many properties including Michael Drive, off Kings Road. He graduated from Siena College with a BA in Sociology and worked as a placement counselor for the disabled with the Schenectady County Department of Social Services for many years.
He was predeceased by his parents and siblings, Philomena, Dominick “Ben”, Alfonzo and Arthur Marotta.
Michael is survived by his beloved wife of 63 years, Mary Iovinella Marotta; loving children, Michele Ruzzo and her husband Richard, of Clifton Park, Michael D. Marotta, of Westminster, CO, Christopher Marotta and his wife Suzanne, of Glenville, James Marotta and Jeffrey Marotta, both of Schenectady; grandchildren, Richard W. Ruzzo and his wife Bernice and Jason M. Miller; great-grandchildren, Joshua, Justin, Alyssa Marie and Antonio Joseph; a brother, Joseph Marotta, of Colonie; many nieces and nephews.
The Marotta family would like to extend their sincere appreciation and gratitude to the entire staff of the Ellis Residential and Rehabilitation Center and Dr. Richard Toll for the loving care and assistance of Michael.
Services will be held on Thursday at 12 noon at the Rossi & Ditoro Funeral Home, Union at N. Jay Streets, with the Rev. Dominick Isopo, officiating. Interment will follow in the Gerald BH Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery, Schuylerville.
Relatives and friends are invited and may call at Rossi & Ditoro Funeral Home, Wednesday evening from 5 to 8 pm.
