SCHENECTADY – Joseph A. Spadafora, 92, a lifelong resident of Goosehill, entered into eternal rest on Thursday, May 14, 2026, after a long and well-lived life.
Joe was born in Rogliano, in the Province of Cosenza in the Calabria region of Italy, a son of the late Dominick and Rosina (Ubriaco) Spadafora. In 1947, his family immigrated to America. He attended Nott Terrace High School and proudly served his country in the United States Army.
Following his honorable discharge, Joe opened Superior Barber Shop on Nott Street in the 1960s. For generations, the shop was more than a barber shop, it was a neighborhood gathering place filled with friendship, and stories. Many young boys in Goosehill received their first haircut from Joe. He remained dedicated to his customers and his work until retiring in 2022.
Joe was also deeply devoted to his faith. A lifelong parishioner of St. Anthony’s Church, he was a member of the Holy Name Society, often leading the Festa parade, and volunteered as an usher and bingo worker. He also bowled in the Holy Name Bowling League, was a member of the Knights of Columbus 3rd Degree, the 4th Degree, Lt. Gov. Thomas W. Wallace Assembly and a member of the Sons and Daughters of Italy, Gabriele D’Annunzio Lodge #321.
Above all, Joe’s greatest joy was his family. He cherished the traditions that kept everyone together, dinners, holidays, celebrations, and time spent around the table surrounded by those he loved. Proud of his Italian heritage and devoted to his family, Joe will be remembered as a caring son, brother, uncle, and friend whose kindness, faith, and steady presence touched generations of lives.
In addition to his parents, Joe was predeceased by his sister, Elena and devoted brother, Mario Spadafora.
He is survived by his loving family; sister-in-law, Anne Marie (Pacelli) Spadafora; nephews and niece, John (Teri) Spadafora, Donna (Michael) Decker and David Spadafora.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11am, on Wednesday, May 20, 2026 at St. Anthony’s Church, 331 Seward Place. Interment with Military Honors will follow in St. Anthony’s Cemetery.
Relatives and friends are invited and may call at St. Anthony’s Church, in the DeFranco Room on Wednesday, from 9-11 am.
