Joseph A. Mangino

GLENVILLE – Joseph A. Mangino, 100, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, June 20, 2018.
Joe was born in Schenectady on January 19, 1918 a son of Desiderio and Maria Antonia (Ferro) Mangino. He graduated from Nott Terrace High School and worked at the American Locomotive Company in Schenectady. He served in the US Navy during WWII, and upon his return worked for GE, where he became active in the local labor movement. Joe devoted his life to working for his family, community- based groups and organized labor.
He held numerous positions with the UE, and later the IUE Local 301, culminating in a lengthy tenure as Business Agent. He was especially proud of negotiating and overseeing the enactment of health, dental, and other essential insurance coverage for Local 301 members and other GE employees. He was an early and ardent advocate for pay equity for women, workplace child care and stable pension benefits for all workers.
Upon his retirement from Local 301, Joe was asked to be a special assistant for labor relations at the NYS Department of Correctional Services. Joe also served with numerous community organizations, such as Schenectady County Community College, the Schenectady Community Action Program. Albany Savings Bank, and the renovation of Proctors Theatre. He was President of the Capital District Labor Council, a member of the Knight of Columbus; the Gabriel D’Annunzio Sons of Italy Lodge #321 and a communicant of St. Anthony’s Church, was a Schenectady Patroon. Joe was an avid NY Yankees fan, and enjoyed watching his great grandsons play Little League.
He was predeceased by his beloved wife of 64 years Elizabeth Carey Mangino, whom he married on September 23, 1943; siblings, Carl, James, Jessie and Victor Mangino.
Joe is survived by his daughters, Ann (Robert) Facenda and Mary Ellen (Maria DiTullio) Mangino; grandchildren, Susan (Jay) Bowers, Karen (Aaron) Proietti, Marin Mangino-DiTullio and Marley Mangino- DiTullio; great-grandchildren, Evan and Aidan Bowers and Elizabeth and Sarah Proietti; cousin, Dominic Scavia; many nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday at 11 am at St. Anthony’s Church, 331 Seward Place. Interment will follow in St. Anthony’s Cemetery.
Relatives and friends are invited to call at St. Anthony’s Church on Saturday from 10 to 11 am. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations to the Joan Nicole Prince Home, 22 Glenview Drive, Scotia, NY 12302.
