SCHENECTADY – Joseph Conto, 89, of Foster Avenue, entered peacefully into heaven on Friday at Ellis Hospital.
Joseph was born in Bridgeport, CT, on September 10, 1922 a son of the late Carmino and Elizabeth Santoro Conto. The family moved to Schenectady and Joe was educated and raised in the Bellevue area. He enlisted in the United States Navy, and served on the USS Chester in the Pacific Theater during WWII participating in nine major battles. Joe upped his enlistment and served in the Korean War on a LSM-110 as chief electrician. He worked at the ALCO where he met the love of his life, his precious Michelena. He was a member of the Rotterdam Elks, the VFW Hildebrandt Post, the USS Chester Association and St. Anthony's Church.
He was predeceased by his beloved wife whom he married June 28, 1953, Michelena Fondano Conto in 2004 after 51 years of marriage and his loving son Michael Conto on October 18, 2011; siblings, Leopold Zeppetelli and Mary Conto Chillairi.
He is survived by his devoted son, Joseph T. Conto; his adoring granddaughters, Lisa Conto and Joely Conto; a brother Thomas Conto; several nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews; sisters in law and brothers in law.
Services will be held on Thursday morning at 10 am from the Rossi & Ditoro Funeral Home, 501 Union at N. Jay Street, then to St. Anthony's Church, Seward Place, where a Liturgy of the Word will be celebrated at 11AM. Interment will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery, Schenectady.
Relatives and friends are invited and may call at the Rossi & Ditoro Funeral Home, Wednesday from 5 to 8 pm.
