John M. Scarchilli

LATHAM – John M. Scarchilli, 59, of Latham, President and CEO of Pioneer Bank, entered into eternal rest on Saturday morning. John was born in Troy, son of Mary Zotta Scarchilli, of Waterford and the late John J. “Pep” Scarchilli. He was raised in Waterford and was a graduate of Hudson Valley Community College and Siena College. John honorably served his Country in the U.S. Army in the field artillery division from 1971 to 1973. John began his career at Pioneer Savings Bank in 1977, serving in several positions before being elected as President and CEO in 1997. He currently served as a trustee of the bank. John had a relentless passion for positive thinking. His integrity and his leadership abilities were attributes that he lived each and every day. John currently serves as a director of the Federal Home Loan Bank of New York, the New York Bankers Association, the New York Banking Board and the Independent Bankers Association of New York. He also serves as co-chairman of Troy 2020. John has served in the past on the following Boards: Community Hospice, Latham Circle Soccer, Commission on Economic Opportunity (CEO), The Friendly Sons of St. Patrick, Center for Economic Growth, The Rensselaer County Regional Chamber of Commerce, and the Troy Downtown Collaborative. He is also a former board member of Northeast Health Foundation and Northeast Health. John was a member of the Monday night Alpha Golf League for 34 years, still looking for his first hole-in-one. John also enjoyed the company of his college fraternity brothers from Sig Ep Phi who gathered regularly over the past 40 years. He enjoyed being an amateur photographer, self taught musician and gardener. He found peace and relaxation in nurturing his perennial flower garden which he planted right after being first diagnosed with cancer. Of the numerous accolades John received throughout his life, he was most proud of his three sons and the times they shared. A very active communicant of Blessed Virgin Mary of Czestochowa Church in Colonie, John is a member of the choir, playing his guitar faithfully each week at Sunday Mass. He also enjoyed accompanying his church group, the Joyful Voices, who performed at Pioneer Bank during the annual Victorian Stroll. The Scarchilli family wishes to extend their most sincere gratitude to Dr. Charles Weissman and his very caring staff at NYOH in Latham for their long term support and dedication over the past nine years while John courageously fought his long term battle with cancer. Also to Eileen Bagnoli and Jack Ihnatolya of Pioneer Bank, who along with John have a 110 years of combined service, for their dedication and friendship. Survivors, in addition to his mother, include his devoted wife of 36 years, Nancy Grochmal Scarchilli; his loving sons, John (Raechel) Scarchilli of Cincinnati, OH, Zachary (Julie Guzy) Scarchilli, of Wynantskill and Lucas Scarchilli, of Latham; his adoring grandsons, Michael and Gabriel Scarchilli; his caring sisters and brother, Deborah Scarchilli, of Waterford, Doreen Ditoro, of Schenectady; and Richard Scarchilli, of Lake Luzerne; eleven nieces and nephews. A Mass will be celebrated at the Blessed Virgin Mary of Czestochowa Church, Maxwell Road, Colonie on Wednesday morning at 10 am with the Most Reverend Bishop Thaddeus Peplowski of Lancaster, NY, officiating. Bishop Peplowski is the uncle of John and Nancy. Interment with full military honors will be in the Gerald B.H. Solomon National Cemetery, Schuylerville at a later date. Relatives and friends are invited and may call at the Blessed Virgin Mary of Czestochowa Church on Monday and Tuesday from 3 to 8 pm.
