SCHENECTADY – Herbert A. Stevens, 83, passed away peacefully at home on Friday, September 27, 2024, surrounded by his family.
Born in Plattsburgh on December 4, 1941 to the late Gilbert and Viola Stevens. He was predeceased by his brothers, Gilbert (Sonny) Stevens, Richard Stevens, and a grandson Joseph A. Hosier.
Herbert is survived by the love of his life, Carol A. Stevens; children, Richard Stevens, Paul Stevens, Anne Stevens, Chantell (Mike) Stevens, Chanell (Fred) Dedrick; also survived by his grandchildren, Nicholas (Molly) Stevens, Carmella (Jason) Phelps, Raymond M (Jaedyn) Hosier, Jessie (Chelsey) Hosier, Dakota (Madison) Hosier, Ryan Roberts, Samantha (Eric) Linkowski and Brandon (Sierra) Lovegrove; great-grandchildren, Cameron Stevens, Jonny Stevens, Rylee Stevens, Amelia Stevens, Willow and Sawyer Linkowski, Jaxon Hosier and Dallas Stevens; a brother, Bruce Stevens and a sister-in-law, Lois Frankel; two very special honorary sons, Bill Phelps and Ray Hosier.
Herbert graduated from Plattsburgh High School and went on to honorably serve his Country in the United States Navy during the Vietnam Conflict. He was stationed aboard the USS Ironside, now known as the USS Constitution. Upon returning home, Herb earned his associated Degree from HVCC and then embarked on a distinguished 41 year career with Schenectady Transportation, which later became CDTA. After his retirement, Herb continued his enjoyment of driving for Brown School Bus Company for many years. In his free time, Herb was Umpire #33 at various local baseball fields.
Herb will be remembered for his dedication to his work, his service to his country and his steadfast presence in the community, but what he will most be remembered by is his love and devotion to his wife, Carol, whom he married on December 31, 1982, then renewed their vows in 1999. He was a loyal husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend to many. He loved his family unconditionally. He was a number one fan to the Yankees, where they made it to the playoffs on the day he was called home.
Calling hours will be held on Monday, from 11:30-1:30 at Rossi & Ditoro Funeral Home. Interment will follow with Military Honors at 2 pm in Most Holy Redeemer Cemetery.
