ROTTERDAM – Gordon D. Hamil entered into eternal peace on Friday, June 13, 2025, after battling Alzheimer's with grace and strength. He was born in Schenectady, on December 29, 1940, the son of the late Woodrow Hamil and Elsie Pangburn Clancy. He attended Mont Pleasant High School, graduating in 1958, and went on to Siena College, where he played on the basketball team while earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in Social Studies. He later pursued a Master's degree in History at SUNY Albany, preparing him for a long and meaningful career in education. He dedicated his professional life to teaching in the Mohonasen School District, first at the junior high level and later at the high school, where he taught 11th grade and also served with commitment as the Junior Varsity basketball coach. During the summer months Gordon took on the task of painting the interior and exterior of homes for many years.
Gordon honorably served in the Air National Guard from 1963 to 1969, receiving a graduate certificate for outstanding performance at the Amarillo Texas Technical Training Center.
Gordon was a selfless and devoted man whose greatest accomplishments were the deep love he held for his family, his dedication to his students, and the lifelong friendships he nurtured. He enjoyed gardening, especially growing flowers, vegetables, and raspberries; sports, puzzles, road trips, political discussions, and cheering on his beloved New York Yankees and New York Giants.
He was predeceased by his sister, Robin Mussen and nephew, David Mussen.
Gordon is survived by his beloved wife of 62 years, Marion Rossi Hamil; his daughters, Lynn Hamil and her fiancé Chris Neal, and Karen (George) Motyka; his cherished grandchildren, Danielle Motyka and her fiancé Brian, Amanda Motyka, Michael Motyka, and Christopher Neal and niece, Amy Mussen; and many nieces and nephews and friends.
He will be remembered for his kindness, generosity, and unwavering devotion to those he loved.
Services will be held on Wednesday at 12 noon at the Rossi & Ditoro Funeral Home, 501 Union St. Interment will follow in St. Anthony’s Cemetery. Relatives and friends are invited to call on Wednesday from 10 am to 12 noon.
