SCHENECTADY - Giuseppe Di Legge, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and master mason, passed away peacefully at the age of 90, on July 19, 2024, at home surrounded by his loving family. Born and educated in Fontechiari, province of Frosinone, Italy, Joe honorably served as a Municipale Consigliere (Town Councilman) in Fontechiari and with the Fanteria Regiment in the Italian Army. Joe immigrated to America in 1968, with dreams of a brighter future and a heart full of determination. He was incredibly proud to become an American citizen, finding joy in celebrating both his Italian heritage and his new citizenship.
A true artisan, Joe’s hands were magic with cement. His skilled craftsmanship graced countless homes both in America and his native Italy, leaving a legacy of beauty and durability. He worked and was a member of Laborers Union #157, for over 50 years, where his work as a laborer/ mason was not just a profession but a passion.
Joe’s devotion to his family was unparalleled. As a husband of 65 years to his beloved wife, Luigina, he provided love, support, and unwavering care beyond what could be expected. His role as a father and grandfather was marked by kindness, guidance, teachings of all skills and craftsmanship, and a deep sense of responsibility. He traveled to his beloved Italy often, where he maintained cherished friendships, relaxed, and picked the seasonal olive crop. He was known for making great wine; tending to his fabulous garden, and was an avid hunter, all of which were sources of pride and joy for him.
A man of deep faith, Joe lived his life with a strong belief in God. He was a lifelong communicant of St. Anthony’s Church.
He was predeceased by his parents; siblings, Ida DiCarlo, Pierina Di Legge, and Anna DiCocco; many brothers and sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews.
Joe is survived by his loving wife, Luigina DiCarlo Di Legge, their sons, Rinaldo (Phyllis) Di Legge and Giuseppe M. Di Legge; cherished granddaughters, Amanda and Sofia Di Legge; sisters, Assunta Ciccarelli, Lucia Tagliaferro, and Gemma Cianchini; his sisters-in-law, Italia Capoccia, Costanza Zurlo, and Diana DiCarlo; many loving nieces and nephews.
Services will be held on Saturday at 9 am from the Rossi & Ditoro Funeral Home, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 am at St. Anthony’s Church. Entombment will follow in Most Holy Redeemer Cemetery.
Relatives and friends are invited and may call at the Rossi & Ditoro Funeral Home on Friday, from 4 to 7 pm.
Memorial contributions may be made in Joe’s memory to St. Anthony’s Church Restoration Fund.
