SCHENECTADY – Florinda Basile, 96, passed away peacefully on Friday February 14, 2025, at Eddy Village Green in Cohoes.
Florinda, (Flo) was born in Schenectady. She went with her entire family to Torello Italy in the Providence of Salerno when she was four years old and grew up on the beautiful mountain side near Pompeii and the Amalfi Coast. When she was twenty years old, she, along with her mother and her sister Elva, returned home to the United States of America to join her father, brother and older sister who had returned home earlier to set up the family household on Avenue B in Schenectady.
Florinda and her sister attend Nott Terrace High School in Schenectady. She then went on to learn a trade as a Seamstress. She started her professional career in her chosen field in the bustling factories of her day. As the factories shut down, Florinda learned how to pivot, and went to work in the public sector, first at Glendale Nursing Home, then retiring from Capital District OTB. Florinda was a lifelong communicant of St. Anthony’s Church. She was an independent woman who was kind and devoted to the care of her mother and family.
Florinda was predeceased by her father Michele Basil, her mother Giuseppina Basile, Brother’s Admarino, Sylvio, and Elio Basile. Her sisters, Adarecha Basile and Lola Vegezzi. Her sister-in-law Josephine Basile (Josey) and brother-in-laws Joseph Vegezzi and Robert Laurange and her niece Kathleen Monti.
She is survived by her loving sister Elva Laurange; adoring nieces Deborah Laurange (Rick Devine), Michel Trapp (Earl), Maryann Monti, and Meloney Monti. Nephews Michael Laurange (Damerice), Michael Basile (Kathleen), Joseph Basile and Anthony Laurange. Several great nieces and nephews.
Services will be held on Thursday February 20th at 12 noon at the Rossi & Ditoro Funeral Home, 501 Union Street, followed by a Mass of Christian burial at St. Anthony’s Church at 12:30 pm. Interment will follow in St. Anthony’s Cemetery, Glenville.
Relatives and friends are invited to call at Rossi & Ditoro Funeral Home on Thursday from 10 am to 12 noon.
Memorial contributions may be made in Florinda’s memory to St. Anthony’s Church.
