NISKAYUNA - Elizabeth “Betty” DeSimone of Schenectady, NY, and Marco Island, Florida entered into eternal rest on May 22, 2024, to join her beloved family.
Betty was born on November 1, 1934 in Schenectady, NY. She was a proud graduate of Nott Terrace High School, Schenectady, and The College of St. Rose in Albany, where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree, Cum Laude. Betty worked for more than 35 years as a technical librarian for the Knolls Atomic Power Laboratory (KAPL). She later joined General Electric’s Machine Apparatus Operations division (MAO) before retiring in the early 1990s.
After retirement she spent winters at her condominium on Marco Island, enjoying time with family and friends who were happy to visit Florida during the cold weather months.
Betty and her younger sister, Patty, were inseparable throughout their entire lives. Growing up, they spent many summers at their uncle’s camp on Sacandaga Lake. As adults, they traveled extensively together in the U.S. and made numerous trips to Italy and France to visit their extended family. She enjoyed reading, traveling, and all types of card and puzzle games.
Betty was a member of Chi Sigma Theta sorority, the U.S. Singletons, the College of St Rose Alumni Club, and also an active volunteer at the Dominican Retreat House & Conference Center in Niskayuna. She was a lifelong member of St. Anthony’s Church in Schenectady where she served as lector, Eucharistic Minister, member of the parish liturgy team, and Festa volunteer.
Betty was known for her exceptional research skills and quick wit. But above all, she had a great love of family and was immensely proud of her Italian American heritage.
Betty was predeceased by her parents, Domenick and Lena (Venditti) DeSimone, her brother Dominick (Donnie), and her sister Patricia (Patty). She is survived by her sister-in-law, Rita Nicodemi DeSimone of Schenectady, her niece Michele Shellard (Fred), and her great-niece Alessandra Shellard, of Niskayuna. She also leaves behind numerous cousins from the Venditti and DeSimone families residing throughout the U.S., as well as in Italy and France.
The family wishes to extend its heartfelt gratitude to the outstanding care and compassion shown to Betty from the entire staff at the Marjorie Doyle Rockwell Center, with a special thank you to Joanne and Tamara who took exceptional care of her.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 am on Wednesday, May 29th at St. Anthony’s Church, Schenectady. Calling hours are from 10 am to 11 am in the Fr. DeFranco Chapel at St. Anthony’s Church immediately preceding the Mass. Entombment will follow in St. Anthony’s Cemetery.
