SCHENECTADY – Dominick A. ‘Tony’ DiMatteo, 88, of Cullen Avenue, entered into eternal peace on Saturday, June 27 at, Glens Falls Hospital with his family at his side.
Dominick was born on February 14, 1938, in Alvignano, Province of Caserta, Italy, to the late Giuseppe and Nicolina Rosa Peretta DiMatteo. After living in Switzerland for nine years, he came to the United States on February 8, 1964, first settling in Pennsylvania before making Schenectady his home in 1965.
Dominick had a strong work ethic throughout his life, working for Fazzone Construction, Mt. Pleasant Bakery, Codino's Italian Market, the City of Schenectady, Campbell Plastics for 19 years, and later as a landscaper for the Mallozzi family, where he retired after 13 years of dedicated service.
He was a former member of the Sons of Italy Lodge and a faithful communicant of St. Anthony's Church. Proud of his Italian heritage, Dominick cherished sharing his traditions, values, and culture with his family.
A gifted gardener, Dominick had a remarkable talent for making sausage, growing flowers, vegetables, fruit trees and stellar grape vines, which produced his homemade award winning wines at St. Anthony’s and the Sons of Italy. He was especially proud of his fig and peach trees, and his gardens reflected the care he devoted to everything he cultivated. His greatest joy, however, was his family, and he treasured every moment spent with them.
He was predeceased by his devoted wife, Annunziata Petrucci DiMatteo; his daughter, Carmelina Walkup; and his twin siblings, Francesco and Annunziata DiMatteo.
He is survived by loving and devoted children, Josephine (Michael) Peek, Nicolina Rosa (Kevin) Margas, Joseph Angelo (Lisa) DiMatteo, and Angelina (Jeff) DeCarlo; son-in-law, John Walkup; his adoring grandchildren, Nicole Marie John) Koch, Michael R. Jaycox, Melissa Ruth Walkup, Joseph Paul (Anabelle) Walkup, Kristina Sherri Walkup, Jessica Nolé Di Matteo, Anthony Joseph Di Matteo, Gianni Matteo DeCarlo, Domenico Salvatore DeCarlo; and his great-grandchildren, Jordan Daniel Pregent, Ross Phillip Pregent, twin, Kaylee Sage and Mia Patrice Yeachel, Glen Nicholas Walkup; a brother, Nicola (Anna) Di Matteo; many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Services will be held at 9 am on Thursday from the Rossi & Ditoro Funeral Home, Union at N. Jay Streets and then to St. Anthony’s Church, Seward Place, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 am. Entombment in the family mausoleum will follow in Most Holy Redeemer Cemetery.
Relatives and friends are invited and may call at the Rossi & Ditoro Funeral Home on Wednesday from 5 to 8 pm.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Anthony’s Church, 331 Seward Place, Schenectady, NY 12305
