ROTTERDAM – Dominic Scavia, 96, passed away on Saturday, July 22, 2023, at home surrounded by his loving children.
Dom was born in Schenectady, son of the late Dominic and Natalina Ferro Scavia, Sr. He graduated in 1945 from Nott Terrace High School, where he played football and wrestled. Dom enlisted in the US Marine Corps and served as a combat swimming instructor preparing troops for the Pacific Theater. After WWII, Dom returned to Schenectady where he worked for the General Electric Company for 40 years, retiring as Supervisor of Test Operations for the Gas Turbine Division in 1986. In retirement, he was the president of the GEAA where he organized and enjoyed many trips within the US and abroad with friends and family. He was an enthusiastic member of the WWII Veterans Club, enjoying comradery with fellow vets, including taking to the sky in a WWII biplane at the age of 93. He was a former member of the Holy Name Society at St. Anthony’s Church and a communicant of Our Lady Queen of Peace and St. Anthony’s Church. Dom was a devoted father to his four children and was known as “the rock” for his unwavering support of his immediate and extended family across four generations.
He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Flora Rossi Scavia in 2017, after 70 blessed years of marriage; son David Scavia; and siblings, Mary Attanaseo, Rita Manti, and Albert Scavia.
Dom is survived by his loving children, Sharon (Robert) Dawes of Sand Lake, Donald (Ellen) Scavia of Landenberg, PA, and Debbie (Kenneth) Pennock of Fultonville; his grandchildren, who were the light of his life, Donald Scavia, Matthew Dawes, Robert Dawes, Sarah Mullins, Jessica Kern, Christopher Marotta, and Sarah Miller; a sister-in-law Marion Hamil of Rotterdam. He had twelve adoring great-grandchildren Nicholas, Alexander, Sydney, Jack, Parker, Piper, Aidan, Hannah, Maya, Christopher, Gino, and Benjamin; and several loving nieces and nephews
Services will be held on Friday, July 28 beginning at 10:00 AM from the Rossi & Ditoro Funeral Home, 501 Union Street; followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 AM, at St. Anthony’s Church, Seward Place. Interment will follow in St. Anthony’s Cemetery.
Relatives and friends are invited and may call at the Rossi & Ditoro Funeral Home on Thursday from 5:00 to 7:00 PM.
