SCOTIA - Aileen Smith-Caruso, a loving mother, grandmother, and well-loved member of the community, sadly passed away on October 25, 2022, at the age of 73.
Aileen was a very accomplished woman. She received her Associate degree of applied science in nursing from Russell Sage Junior College and then continued on to receive her Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from St. Rose. Aileen was an American managed care consultant, certified case manager, administrator Physician Practice Management (CAPPM); and a Registered Nurse in New York. Aileen was the recipient of the Rector’s Recognition award at St. Georges Church (1991); the United States Oncology Excellence award (2004), Outstanding Leadership and Advocacy award for the National Patient Advocate Foundation, (2004, 05, 06).
Along with her many accolades, Aileen’s biggest accomplishment was her son and family. Aileen’s faith and church were of great significance in her daily life. She was a lifelong member of St. George’s Church. She loved being a part of her church community, and volunteering to be a part of many activities.
Aileen was a spirited woman who enjoyed being around her family and friends, whom she truly cherished. She had a zest for life and learning, she loved reading, expressing herself artistically, and writings. She would travel at any chance given. One of her favorite places to visit was Ireland.
Aileen had a love for her caregivers toward the end of life who helped in so many ways. She truly appreciated their love and support. As a nurse herself, she enjoyed having that trust and respect
She is survived by her son Patrick M. Caruso whom she loved and who was by her side until she passed; daughter-in-law Kathleen Caruso, grandsons, who warmed her heart with love and joy, Nicolas Caruso, Ryder Caruso, and Collin Caruso, all of Mayfield; brothers, Robert Smith (Myrna), Kevin Smith (Maureen), a sister MaryAnne DiMattio; her former husband, George Caruso and his extended family; several nieces and nephews.
Aileen is now at rest with her father, Robert V Smith, mother Mary (Prince) Smith, brother Michael Smith; nieces Alicia and Tina Smith, and nephew, Kelly DiMattio.
Services for Aileen will be held on November 5, 2022, at St. George’s Episcopal Church, in the Historic Stockade, 30 N. Ferry Street, Schenectady at 11:00 am.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Aileen’s memory to St. George’s Boiler Fund.
