SCHENECTADY – Angelo DiPietro, 100, entered into the Arms of the Lord on Wednesday morning at Ellis Hospital after a brief illness.
Angelo was born in Schenectady, a son of the late Francesco and Maria DiPietro. As a young child Angelo returned with his family to Fondachelli, Province of Messina, Sicily. He returned to the United States in 1931, staying for a short time with his brother and family in Detroit, MI, before settling in Schenectady in 1936. He started and was the owner operator of Angelo DiPietro’s Wholesale Hardware, on VanVranken Avenue. He worked many long hours in his successful business and retired in 1980. He was an avid bowler, bowling in several leagues, with two 300 games. He enjoyed fishing and hunting and tending his rose garden. One of his greatest pleasures was bringing his great nieces and nephews fishing on Saratoga Lake. He was a lifelong and devoted communicant of St. Anthony’s Church, where he was a member of the Choir for 70 years, the Holy Name Society and a Eucharistic Minister.
Angelo was predeceased by his siblings, Carmelo, Giuseppe and Salvatore DiPietro and Carmela Garofalo.
Survivors include his beloved wife of 74 blessed years, Adele Laviano DiPietro; nieces and nephews, Franco DiPietro and his wife Esther, Maria Puglisi and her husband Giovanni, all of Sicily; Armand and his wife Carol Garofalo, of Clifton Park, Edith Burns and her husband David, of Lynnfield, MA; great-nieces and nephews, Simona DiPietro and her husband Luigi Gallo, Adele Antonucci and her husband Vincenzo, Giuseppe Puglisi and his wife Caterina, all of Sicily, Karen Hassett and her husband Kevin, Douglas Garofalo and his wife Christine, Brian Garofalo and his companion Lori Guzy, Janice Baldyga and her husband Todd, Christopher Burns and his wife Dawn Hoyt Burns, Daniel Burns, Gregg Burns, Maura Kate Burns and her husband Gavin Gillan, Neil Burns, Jennifer Porter, Steve Clark, Rosalind Mason; great-great nieces and nephews, Ryan and Amelia Garofalo, Kiri Hassett, Max and Theodore Baldyga, Chiara Burns, Kristen Stamm and Liesel and Thomas Kershul, Isla Gillan, Mariagiuseppe Puglisi, Sveva Gallo,
Services will be held Saturday morning at 8 am from the Rossi & Ditoro Funeral Home, Union at N. Jay Streets, then to St. Anthony’s Church, Seward Place, where a Mass will be celebrated at 9 am. Private Entombment at St. Anthony’s Cemetery, Glenville.
Relatives and friends are invited and may call at the Rossi & Ditoro Funeral Home Friday evening from 5 to 7 pm.
